Kenyan Cops Under Fire for Filmmakers Raid

Police Reform Working Group slammed officials for arresting four film producers right before Press Freedom Day. The group asked police to free the equipment taken from Nicholas Gichuki, Brian Adagala, Mark Karubiu, and Chris Wamae. Police should hunt down security forces who killed protesters instead of going after filmmakers, the reform group said.

The BBC showed how military and police may have killed Ericcson Mutisya, David Chege, Eric Shieni, and sixty other people during protests. Kenya promised to protect human rights at a recent Geneva meeting just days before these arrests happened. The police action breaks both Kenyan law and international agreements about free speech.

Kenya faces many problems with taxes, healthcare, and the economy. The reform group warned that going after critics makes people trust the government even less. The statement asked all Kenyans and news groups to stand with creative people who speak the truth about those in power.
