Kenyans rescued from Russia draft, govt warns job seekers

The government got eighteen Kenyans back from Russia. Foreign Affairs head Musalia Mudavadi confirmed their rescue and return. These citizens were stranded there after illegal recruiters signed them up for the war in Ukraine. Diplomats from the Nairobi mission in Moscow handled the extraction, issuing emergency travel documents.

Officials documented each case for an ongoing probe into these recruitment rings. They believe over two hundred people might have been caught up by these networks operating in both countries. Some Kenyans reportedly got hurt, while others were left stuck after recruitment attempts failed. The embassy is still getting distress calls from people trapped in various Russian military camps.

Authorities are now talking to Russian officials to move those still held to the embassy for eventual repatriation. Returnees will receive government counseling and go through a reintegration program. Mudavadi warned young people to check any foreign job offers with official ministries first, calling the recruiters ruthless and corrupt. Despite this mess, he mentioned Kenya still wants to strengthen ties with Russia and even signed a new labor agreement for legitimate work abroad. They're also reaching out to Ukraine about any Kenyan prisoners of war there.
