Kenya's 11-medal Tokyo haul, Mvurya hails 59 stars

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya praised Kenya's athletes after their strong showing at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The nation secured second place globally behind the United States with 11 total medals. Seven gold medals highlighted Kenya's dominant track performance during the competition. Team Kenya sent 59 competitors to represent the country on the world stage. The delegation consisted of 23 female athletes and 36 male participants.

Mvurya pledged continued government support for training facilities and athlete development programs. He encouraged competitors who failed to reach medal positions to maintain their competitive spirit. Kenya has submitted a proposal to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships on African soil. Female athletes delivered exceptional results with Beatrice Chebet earning double gold medals in distance events. Male competitors contributed significantly with Emmanuel Wanyonyi setting a championship record in the 800-meter race.
