Kenya's power demand surges to new record of 2,362 megawatts

Kenya Power documented unprecedented electricity consumption when the national grid reached 2,362.28 megawatts on July 23, 2025. This figure exceeded earlier benchmarks of 2,325 megawatts from July 2 and 2,316 megawatts recorded during February. Chief Executive Joseph Siror linked the surge to expanded grid connections and increased seasonal heating requirements. The utility provider added more than 401,000 customers during the fiscal year that concluded June 30, 2025. Rising user numbers combined with weather-related consumption patterns have intensified grid pressure.

The company advances last-mile connectivity initiatives to reach residential, commercial, and industrial consumers across multiple regions. Kenya Power plans to establish 45 electric vehicle charging stations throughout six counties during the current fiscal period. Four electronic cooking centers operate in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kisumu to promote modern appliance adoption. The utility collaborates with educational institutions and hospitality businesses to expand cleaner cooking technologies. Growing demand demonstrates increased national grid dependence and underscores infrastructure investment requirements for electrification objectives.
