Victor Kiprono Bett walked home on December 30, 2023 at 7:30 pm. Two men attacked him with a panga knife near Kapchereren village. Patrick Kiplangat Rono and Denis Cheruiyot Rono hurt Bett badly on his ankle. They forced him to come with them to their family home. The brothers wanted Bett to explain his relationship with one of their wives.
The attackers took Bett to see their mother for answers. Their mother told them they had attacked the wrong person. The family left Bett unconscious on the roadside after the fight. Doctors confirmed Bett suffered serious injuries when he reached the hospital. Police arrested both brothers and charged them with three crimes.
Justice Joseph Karanja heard their appeal case at Kericho High Court on June 5, 2025. The brothers originally received 10 years in prison for their crimes. They asked the court to reduce their sentences because they were first-time criminals. The judge agreed their punishment was too harsh for the situation. He cut their prison time from 10 years down to just 3 years.
