Kigezi Community Honors Nuwagaba as Bank Deputy

People from Kigezi High School joined up with friends from the Diocese of Kigezi last Thursday night. They all came together to celebrate Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba becoming the new Deputy Governor at the Bank of Uganda. Everyone met at Bishop Gaddie Akanjuna's house on Rugarama Hill in Kabale. The party brought together teachers, student leaders, economics students, church leaders, and many other friends.

Prof. Nuwagaba graduated from Kigezi High School, where he served as head prefect from 1983 to 84. The school principal, Abraham Akampurira, praised him for setting high standards during his time there. He mentioned that recent improvements at the school happened because many people worked hard together. Rev. Reuben Byomuhangi asked Prof. Nuwagaba to trust God as he started his new banking job.

Bishop Akanjuna thanked President Museveni for picking Prof. Nuwagaba from Kabale. The people felt happy about this choice after losing Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, who used to run the Bank of Uganda. The Bishop prayed that God would guide the new deputy governor and called him an ambassador from their region to this important national position. He promised their continued support and prayers.

Prof. Nuwagaba thanked other famous scholars from Kigezi who inspired him, naming Joy Kwesiga, Joy Kyamunyogonya, Mondo Kagonyera, and Ezra Suruma. He quoted Bible verses about wisdom coming from fearing God and stressed that discipline leads to success. Prof. Nuwagaba gave credit to his late mother, who taught him Christian values, hard work, and respect for others.

President Museveni phoned Prof. Nuwagaba on February 9, 2025, just as he was preparing for church. The president praised his work and told him about the appointment. Prof. Nuwagaba promised to serve Uganda with total dedication. He was born in 1964 in Ruhita village, Northern Division, Kabale Municipality—the same hometown as the previous governor, Mutebile.

His education path took him through Kigezi High School before earning degrees from several places. He studied at Makerere University for his bachelor's degree in 1989 and later his PhD in Economics. He earned a Master of Science from the London School of Economics. He also completed an MBA from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute. His knowledge covers money policies, financial management, and economic growth.

He worked as a consultant for big organizations like the World Bank, NEPAD, and the East African Community. He led the FINSCOPE Financial Penetration Project and helped review the National Development Plan for Uganda. His work earned him global recognition, including a spot in the World Who's Who and an International Award for helping world society. His goals include bringing economic stability and helping more people benefit from economic growth.

Prof. Nuwagaba tried running for Parliament in 2016 to represent Kabale Municipality. He lost during the NRM party elections to Dr. Francis Mwesigye Runumi. He called those elections corrupt and claimed the Kabale NRM office allowed bribery. Despite that setback, he continued his economic work until reaching this new high position at the Bank of Uganda.
