Uganda kicked off the King's Baton Relay on July 3, 2025 at the Olympic Committee offices in Kampala. Deputy British High Commissioner Tiffany Kirlew served as the main guest at the launch ceremony. She talked about how the relay brings together community pride, creative expression, and caring for the environment. Sports leaders from across the country came to witness the historic moment. The event drew officials from weightlifting, gymnastics, netball, boxing, and many other sports.
Two local athletes had the honor of carrying the special baton during the ceremony. Boxer Kassim Murungi grabbed the base decorated with Uganda's national colors. Runner Godfrey Chan Wengo held the main part of the baton as they walked from the offices to the press area. Murungi said carrying the baton gave him extra motivation for his sports career. The colorful ceremony marked the start of the baton's journey across Uganda.
The relay will visit several important locations around the country over the next few days. On July 5, the team heads to Kapchorwa where many famous distance runners come from. The baton will stop at Sipi Falls and the high-altitude training center there. On July 6, it appears at swimming championships in Kampala. The final stops happen on July 7 at State House and July 8 at Lake Victoria for environmental cleanup activities.
