KL MPs seek DBKL council reform

A group of government MPs from Kuala Lumpur has submitted a Private Member's Bill to amend the Federal Capital Act 1960. The proposed legislation seeks to introduce council members for Kuala Lumpur City Hall, aiming to decentralize the authority currently held by the federally appointed mayor. Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, leading the initiative, stated the amendment would create a council-based governance structure, enhancing transparency and public representation.

The draft Bill proposes a new council comprising the mayor as chairperson and two members nominated by each Kuala Lumpur MP, with appointments finalized by the Federal Territories Minister. The mayoral appointment process and the existing advisory board's role would remain unchanged. Supporting MPs argued that this reform would allow elected representatives to voice constituent concerns more effectively within the city's administration, noting that similar council systems operate successfully in other states. They expressed hope that the Bill would be debated to initiate governmental action on the proposed reforms.
