Komolafe wins praise, NUPRC revenues surge with grit

The Nigerian upstream oil regulator pulled in 8.79 trillion naira for the government between January and October, with October alone hitting 873.1 billion naira. Gbenga Komolafe runs the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, and policy wonks are giving him credit for tighter enforcement on royalties and better tracking of upstream operations. The commission also wiped out 1.42 billion dollars plus 5.57 trillion naira in old debt that NNPC owed after getting presidential approval to clear the books.

Dr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo said the regulator finally stopped being passive and started acting like it actually has authority over the sector. Energy economist Dr. Hauwa Ibrahim pointed out that strong compliance systems are making the industry more stable even when production stays shaky. Petroleum engineer Mike Osamudiamen thinks clearing those ancient obligations restored credibility to government financial records after decades of messy accounting.
