Koome Lines Up Judges for Gachagua Impeachment Showdown

Chief Justice Martha Koome selected three judges to handle legal challenges against Rigathi Gachagua's removal from office. The Court of Appeal rejected Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu's earlier judge selection on May 9. Gachagua's lawyers argued that choosing judges was the Chief Justice's job alone. Koome picked the same three people Mwilu had chosen before. Justices Eric Ogolla, Anthony Mrima, and Freda Mugambi will hear the case.

Court officials scheduled the next hearing for May 29 at Milimani High Court. Assistant Deputy Registrar Beja Nduke sent notices about upcoming court directions. Gachagua became Kenya's first deputy president, elected through democratic voting processes. Parliament members voted him out on eleven different charges last October. The Senate agreed with five accusations and confirmed his removal.

The former deputy president denies all wrongdoing against him. Gachagua filed papers to cancel four court cases he started earlier. Kelly Maleya opposed this move and wants all cases to continue. Maleya believes the legal questions affect important national issues. Court hearings had stopped until Koome made her judge selections official.
