KPA Launches Multi-Billion Upgrade for Mombasa Port in 2025

Mombasa Port Plans Big Changes for 2025.

The port of Mombasa will get fresh upgrades next year. The Kenya Ports Authority wants better buildings, newer tech, and more space for ships.

Port boss William Ruto shared plans to improve the harbor's efficiency. His team will start by fixing how they track ships and boxes this month.

The port needs more room. Right now, it can handle about 2 million big shipping boxes each year, but that's not enough.

A new dock called Berth 19B will help accommodate more ships. It is 240 meters long and adds space for 300,000 more boxes. The port has already chosen who will build it.

Japan might help build another dock. This one, Berth 23, would be even bigger. It would stretch 300 meters and hold 500,000 boxes.

The port keeps growing. Workers just finished a new place for tugboats. It cost 500 million shillings. They built other things, like a special dock for oil ships and a place for cruise ships.

Thanks to a new road, cars move faster at the port. The Kipevu road has six lanes and runs more than a mile. It cost 2 billion shillings.

The port bought new cranes earlier this year. These giant machines cost 4.1 billion shillings. They help move boxes faster.

Business booms at Mombasa. Last May, the port moved more boxes than ever - over 176,000. More ships come each month. During holidays, 41 ships needed help in just two weeks.

Six small ships joined the port fleet. These ships take boxes to other ports nearby. They connect Mombasa to the world's biggest ships.

The changes strengthen Mombasa. The port wants to stay ahead of others in East Africa, like Dar-es-Salaam. These upgrades should help Kenya's trade grow.
