Kyerwa to give farmers 5m new coffee seedlings

Kyerwa District Council in Tanzania's Kagera Region will provide farmers with over five million enhanced coffee seedlings without charge during the 2025-2026 growing season, with distribution already 85 percent complete across Kaisho, Murongo, Nkwenda, and Mabira divisions. Trade Development Officer Bishanga Tizetwa reported that farm-gate coffee values have climbed from 1,200 to 5,000 shillings per kilogram under President Samia Suluhu Hassan's agricultural support policies.

The district ranks among Tanzania's leading Robusta coffee producers, with regional output reaching 54,203 tons valued at 256.4 billion shillings in the most recent harvest cycle. Authorities attribute production fluctuations between 2020 and 2024 to inadequate farm management and aging tree stock requiring replacement with Tanzania Coffee Research Institute varieties.

Kagera officials aim to boost next season's production from 54,203 to 74,000 tons through a strategic initiative adding 10,000 hectares of improved coffee plantations, projected to generate an additional 96 billion shillings annually for regional farmers.
