Lacquer and felt determine the New York grand piano tone

Steinway builds concert grands in two factories, one in Queens and one in Hamburg, and the pianos still sound different. That gap is not marketing. It lives in the felt, the lacquer, the rim wood, and the technician who voices each instrument before it ships.

New York hammers leave the press soft, then take coat after coat of hardening solution until the treble speaks with real edge. Hamburg hammers arrive dense from Renner, and a technician works them over with needles until they settle. Opposite routes, opposite attack, same name on the fallboard.

Players feel that split in the first fraction of a second, long before the note blooms. It changes how a chord cuts through a string section, how a ballad sits behind a vocal, and how much grit you get when you lean into the keys.

Soft-pressed felt and the hardener that gives it teeth​

Soft-pressed hammer felt is where the New York sound starts, and on its own it plays mild. Technicians build the tone upward with repeated applications of lacquer, raising brightness one layer at a time. Push too far, and the instrument turns glassy.

Hamburg runs the same job backwards. High-compression Weikert felt comes off the Renner line loud and firm, so the voicing work is subtraction, with needles loosening the fibres until the harshness falls away. What survives reads cleaner, tighter, and more even from note to note.

Neither method wins outright, though they leave very different fingerprints. A New York piano tends to carry more colour in the attack and more growl underneath, while a Hamburg piano holds its shape and stays polished when you hit it hard.

Maple rims, huge halls, and raw projection​

American concert halls were bigger and far less forgiving, so New York built for projection with hard rock maple rims and Sitka spruce soundboards. Hamburg worked with beech rims and Bavarian spruce for European rooms, where clarity and tonal variety mattered more than sheer volume. Two markets, two design briefs, and a century of drift between them.

That history is why so many pop and film records lean American. The tone punches through dense arrangements without much help from EQ, which is also why a hybrid-modelled New York concert grand keeps turning up in scoring templates where a rounder European instrument would vanish under the strings.

Producers chasing something darker and more contained usually go the other way and reach for a Hamburg-voiced sample set. Both calls are defensible. The error is choosing by the name on the lid instead of the job the part has to do in the arrangement.

The cabinets set the two apart at a glance as well. New York moved to a square arm design early in the twentieth century and stuck with hand-rubbed lacquer for generations, while Hamburg kept the rounded arm and leaned into high-gloss polyester.

The harmonisation project narrowed the split without erasing it​

Steinway began aligning the two factories in 1984, standardising scale designs, rims, soundboards, bridges, and action parts. Hamburg later swapped beech rims for hard rock maple, which pushed its instruments toward a bigger sound. Both plants now build on maple rims with sapele mahogany inner layers.

The Renner purchase, announced on 29 July 2019, tightened the mechanical side further. Steinway bought a supplier that had fed it action parts for over a century from Gärtringen near Stuttgart, and touch weight specifications now sit under one roof. New York had already wandered off on its own once, running Teflon action components from 1962 until 1982, a detour Hamburg never took.

Hammers stayed stubbornly local through all of it. Each factory still presses its own, still voices them in opposite directions, and that one decision keeps the two instruments recognisably apart. Hamburg even carries models New York dropped, including the Model C semi-concert grand and the six-foot-two Model A-II.

Listen to a New York Model D next to its Hamburg counterpart with the same pianist and the same microphones, and the attack gives the game away inside a bar. The bloom that follows is closer than it used to be. The first millisecond never is.
