Last-minute DPP UTM truce leaves Malawi opposition's fate hanging in balance

Negotiations between the Democratic Progressive Party and United Transformation Movement continue amid ongoing uncertainty. The partnership appeared dead after disagreements over presidential candidate selection. UTM had pushed for Dalitso Kabambe, who previously left DPP for the splinter group, to head the coalition. Party officials called this request ridiculous and unrealistic. Last-minute intervention by DPP leadership prevented UTM from announcing the alliance termination.

Peter Mutharika plans to file his candidacy documents today as the party prepares major announcements. The organization will name its presidential nominee and vice presidential pick during this process. AFORD has joined forces with DPP through a separate electoral agreement. Enock Chihana will serve as Second Vice President if the coalition wins September elections. Questions about alliance leadership structure remain unresolved despite renewed talks.
