Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov flew into Malaysia today for big regional talks. The top diplomat landed at a military base around 8:30 in the morning with his team. Malaysian officials and the Russian ambassador met him at the airport. Lavrov came to join the major ASEAN foreign ministers meeting happening in Kuala Lumpur. The event runs from July 8 to 11 with Malaysia hosting the whole thing.
Turkey and Switzerland sent their foreign ministers as well. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan arrived at 2:30 in the morning at the main airport. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis landed just after midnight with his wife. Sri Lanka's foreign affairs chief also showed up early morning with his delegation. All these big names came for the same regional gathering.
Russia has been working with ASEAN countries since 1991 and became a full partner in 1996. The relationship got upgraded to strategic partnership back in 2018. Lavrov plans to meet with other foreign ministers on the side during the event. He will join the ASEAN-Russia meeting and the regional security forum. More than 1,500 delegates from across the region are attending 24 different meetings over four days.
