Leeto’s social drive brings hope to Free State’s most vulnerable

Free State's social development department completed its inaugural year under the seventh administration by implementing programs targeting poverty and family stability. MEC Mathabo Leeto guided initiatives focused on vulnerable populations while collaborating with agencies that include the South African Social Security Agency and Home Affairs.

Officials convened a strategic planning session on March 13 that emphasized household profiling efforts designed to gather information about family needs. The department intends to document 2,000 households per ward between April and February 2026. October brought Social Development Month activities centered around building resilient families through partnerships addressing hunger and community requirements.

The Dumela Mohaisane campaign launched in November 2024 in Tsheseng and expanded to Virginia in September. Community practitioners conducted home visits, identifying social issues such as unreported abuse while connecting elderly residents and child-headed households with documentation services. Marriage Week took place on Sept. 5 in Welkom, where officials encouraged commitment between partners. A nutrition meeting on Oct. 14 at Albert Nzula Hospital brought together multiple departments to address malnutrition challenges affecting children. The Active Ageing Programme featured competitions for senior citizens on July 29 in Sasolburg.
