Lemba Cultural Festival celebrates heritage and the revival of ancestral traditions in Mberengwa

Hundreds gathered at Mposi Secondary School in Mberengwa District for the Lemba Cultural Annual Festival yesterday. Traditional leaders, villagers, and South African delegates celebrated the heritage of twelve clans from Zimbabwe and South Africa. The community had not organized this cultural event since 1972 before revival efforts began last year. Participants performed traditional dances, songs, and poetry in the Lemba language. Chief Mposi welcomed visitors from across borders to honor their shared identity.

Representatives from the Lemba Business Council in South Africa stressed that cultural unity transcends political boundaries. The organization focuses solely on preserving traditions for future generations without political involvement. Dr Joram Gumbo served as the guest of honor and advised the community to embrace their cultural identity. He warned against the threats to traditional practices posed by globalization, while encouraging the documentation of elder stories. The festival marked a significant milestone in safeguarding Lemba customs and connecting communities across southern Africa.
