Leopard returns to West Coast park

A leopard has been documented inside the West Coast National Park, its first recorded appearance there in 170 years. South African National Parks announced the landmark sighting, confirming the species is naturally recolonizing its former coastal habitat after being wiped out in the mid-1800s. Remote camera traps captured images of the animal, believed to be a solitary male.

This return is attributed to a collaborative conservation initiative involving SANParks, the Landmark Leopard and Predator Project, and several academic and municipal partners. The project has focused on restoring ecological corridors and monitoring populations along the West Coast for several years. The leopard's presence is considered a significant indicator of successful ecosystem recovery and improved land management.

Continued efforts will monitor the animal's movements and health to ensure its long-term survival. The project underscores the importance of partnership and habitat connectivity in rewilding efforts.
