Lilongwe District Council approved a protest march for Citizens for Credible Elections on Thursday. The group received official permission after meeting with council leaders and police on Tuesday. District Commissioner Lawford Palani confirmed the demonstration can happen with safety rules. CfCE will deliver their demands to the commissioner's office during the march. A top Malawi Electoral Commission official must attend the petition ceremony.
Police officers will guide the protesters through the city streets. One hundred CfCE volunteers wearing reflective vests will help keep order during the march. The volunteers will spot troublemakers and prevent problems from starting. Marchers will begin at Community Ground and walk through several neighborhoods. The route ends at the District Commissioner's office where they will present their petition.
