Limpopo Police Arrest Zimbabwean Man With Explosives

Police arrested a 48-year-old man from Zimbabwe at the Beitbridge crossing after finding explosives worth more than R600,000 hidden inside his truck. The arrest happened Tuesday when officers stopped a trailer truck entering South Africa from Zimbabwe. They asked the driver to open his trailer for checking. The driver told them he didn't have keys to the trailer.

Officers forced the trailer open anyway and discovered several bags filled with items they believed were explosives. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly called the Hawks, sent their Musina-based Bomb Technicians plus other special units to help. They searched the vehicle completely a second time and found dangerous materials.

The search turned up sixteen reels of detonating fuse explosives, 2,182 superpowers, and ninety blasting cartridges. Officers immediately arrested the suspect. Court officials scheduled his first appearance at Musina Magistrate's Court for Wednesday. Major General Gopz Govender, who leads the Hawks in Limpopo province, praised everyone involved in catching the suspect.

"This shows law enforcement is winning against transnational criminals," Govender said. A similar situation happened back in February when border agents caught a 37-year-old South African man trying to enter Eswatini through the Mananga Border Gate. He carried twelve Magex Maxam blasting explosives with him. These explosives work really well for mining, quarrying, and construction because they pack serious explosive power. Members of the Royal Eswatini Police Service made that arrest during regular checks at the border.
