LK Bennett teeters on collapse, 280 jobs at risk

A staple of the high street for posh fashion is basically on life support after filing for court protection. LK Bennett submitted an application to the High Court this week to appoint administrators, putting nearly two hundred eighty jobs on the line across the entire group. This move signals that recent attempts to find a fresh buyer or secure new funding likely went nowhere. While the brand built a massive reputation over three decades for its polished British aesthetic, it has struggled to maintain its footing since the first time it collapsed six years ago. The business currently operates from just nine standalone shops and thirteen concessions across Ireland, Jersey, and the United Kingdom, which is a tiny fraction of the global footprint it once maintained.

The current owner, Rebecca Feng, rescued the label out of insolvency back in 2019 through her company, Byland UK, after beating out a rival bid from Mike Ashley. Even with that intervention, the retailer continued to bleed cash due to skyrocketing rents and a massive shift in how people shop for clothes. Recent financial reports showed the firm lost three million two hundred thousand pounds while sitting on a debt pile of nearly twenty-two million pounds. Auditors from Grant Thornton previously warned about significant uncertainty regarding the future of the company, especially after the group breached its agreements with lenders.

Management reportedly worked with advisors from Alvarez & Marsal over the holiday period to find a savior, but those efforts clearly failed to deliver a turnaround. The brand famously enjoyed support from senior politicians and the royal family, yet that prestige was not enough to overcome the structural issues facing physical retail. High business rates and a drop in discretionary spending by consumers made it impossible for the chain to meet its debt deadlines. If the court grants the request for administrators, it will join a growing list of casualties that could not survive the pressure of the modern fashion market.

The fate of the remaining stores now hangs in the balance as experts try to figure out if any part of the business can be saved. Staff across the headquarters and retail locations are waiting for news about their future while the legal process moves forward in the High Court. This second brush with total collapse highlights just how brutal the environment has become for mid-market luxury brands that cannot adapt to the digital age. Professionals in the industry expect the outcome to be finalized within the next few weeks as the company faces a hard deadline to renegotiate its facilities.
