Lukona gang case sees suspects deny charges

Two men from Inyathi, Presley Phiri and Elias Mpofu, appeared in court facing multiple charges, including robbery and aggravated indecent assault. The prosecution alleges they were part of a four-man gang that attacked villagers in the Lukona area of Bubi District. Armed with machetes and axes, the group is accused of breaking into a homestead, assaulting a woman, and stealing six hundred dollars after a violent struggle. They are further accused of indecently assaulting the same victim before moving to another home, where they allegedly stole two cellphones.

Both defendants entered pleas of not guilty to all charges. During proceedings, the first complainant testified to identifying Phiri during the incident, while the second witness stated she could not recognize the accused. The court heard that two other suspects, identified only as Thabo and Devine, remain at large.
