Dr. Kizza Besigye will stay away from the 2026 election race. The four-time presidential hopeful cannot run for office because he chairs the Council of Eminent Persons. This top advisory role prevents him from seeking any elected position. His newly formed People's Front for Freedom party just received official registration from election officials. Besigye currently sits behind bars at Luzira prison facing treason charges.
The PFF party launched at its first national meeting on Tuesday. Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago took over as National Executive Chairperson for two years. Former DP member Dr. Lulume Bayigga will serve as his deputy. Lukwago thanked party members for trusting him during tough times. Kira Municipality lawmaker Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda became the new secretary general.
The party broke away from the Forum for Democratic Change after disputes over campaign funding. PFF leaders claimed the ruling NRM party secretly funded FDC's 2021 election efforts. The Electoral Commission officially registered PFF as a political party during May. The new party recently joined forces with the Alliance for National Transformation to challenge President Museveni. Nobody knows if these two opposition groups will pick one candidate for the presidential race.
