Dr. Kizza Besigye will stay away from the 2026 election race. The four-time presidential hopeful cannot run for office because he chairs the Council of Eminent Persons. This top advisory role prevents him from seeking any elected position. His newly formed People's Front for Freedom party just received official registration from election officials. Besigye currently sits behind bars at Luzira prison facing treason charges.

The Electoral Commission officially registered PFF as a political party during May. The new party recently joined forces with the Alliance for National Transformation to challenge President Museveni.
