Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Off Southern Philippines Coast Without Damage

A strong earthquake hit waters near the southern Philippines on Saturday morning. The United States Geological Survey measured the tremor at magnitude 6.1. The quake struck deep beneath the ocean floor at 101 kilometers down. Officials found no reports of injuries or building damage from the shaking. The earthquake center sat about 70 kilometers away from Davao Occidental province.

Marlawin Fuentes works as a rescuer on Sarangani island. She felt the ground move for about five seconds at her office. Tables and computers moved back and forth during the tremor. The shaking was not very strong but people could feel it clearly. Emergency teams did not issue any tsunami warnings after the earthquake.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This area has many active earthquake zones that stretch from Japan across Southeast Asia. Earthquakes happen almost every day across the island nation. Most tremors are very small and people cannot feel them. Scientists cannot predict when stronger earthquakes will strike the region.
