Mahama DCE Shakeup Stuns Ghana

President Mahama picked new District Chief Executives across Ghana yesterday. The Local Government Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, announced the choices on April 23. These officials need approval from their District Assemblies before taking office. The President made his selections based on rules from the 1992 Constitution and the Local Governance Act of 2016.

Most new nominees come from the Greater Accra Region, where almost thirty positions were filled. Names like Ebi Bright for Tema Metropolitan and Michael Kpakpo Allotey for Accra Metropolitan stand out among the appointments. The Savannah Region received just one nomination, Abdulai Mahmud for the Bole Bamboi district. Bono East Region also saw limited changes, with only Masud Musah Ayaaba Thomas nominated for Atebubu-Amantin.

The announcement represents a significant leadership change at the local government level. Each nominee must secure a majority of support from assembly members in their district. Local government experts see these nominations as part of broader administrative reforms. The President aims to strengthen regional development through these appointments. Assembly members will vote on these candidates in the coming weeks.
