President Mahama revealed major plans for his Feed Ghana Program during a launch event in Techiman on Saturday. The program aims to modernize farming, increase food production, create jobs, and lower food prices across the country. This initiative forms part of his Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda, designed to improve lives through better farming methods.
The government will build Farmer Service Centers nationwide that offer equipment, quality materials, money, market connections, and training for farmers. They will also create land banks in areas with irrigation to help young people start farms. Another focus targets growing more maize, rice, soybeans, and sorghum for local use, processing, and export markets. Sorghum received special attention because breweries need it as a raw material.
The program includes a vegetable project called Yiridya that promotes greenhouse farming near cities. Mahama wants schools and homes to grow tomatoes, onions, garden eggs, okra, and peppers in their yards. He mentioned how backyard gardens once helped feed many homes during earlier food programs. Community gardens will also boost nutrition and family earnings.
Schools with available land will farm crops and raise animals like goats, sheep, and cattle. This helps feed students better meals at lower costs and shows them that farming can become a good career choice.
