Maharashtra to challenge Bombay High Court acquittal of 12 in 2006 train blasts case

Maharashtra leaders plan to contest the Bombay High Court decision that freed twelve defendants from the 2006 Mumbai train bombing case. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the ruling as shocking and announced that the state would petition the Supreme Court. The High Court released all twelve individuals who had received death sentences or life imprisonment from the special court. Justice Anil Kilor and Justice S Chandak delivered the verdict that overturned previous convictions. Five defendants faced execution while seven others served life terms before this reversal.

The July 2006 attacks killed 187 people and wounded more than 800 passengers during evening rush hour. Seven bombs exploded within eleven minutes across local trains between Churchgate and Borivali stations. Investigators linked the attacks to Pakistani intelligence and militant groups working with banned Indian organizations. The court questioned police investigation methods after defendants claimed authorities forced confessions through violence. The bench determined evidence remained insufficient to confirm guilt beyond a reasonable doubt after nineteen years of legal proceedings.
