Maimane pushes digital war on graft

Mmusi Maimane wants South Africa to create an online system that allows citizens to monitor government contracts through their mobile devices. The Standing Committee on Appropriations chairperson said on Tuesday that real-time access to tender information would help people identify corruption and hold officials responsible for poor service delivery. His Build One South Africa party suggests linking the platform to existing Treasury databases to show vendor details, payment schedules, and contract amounts.

Maimane referenced the Tembisa Hospital case, where investigators found 2.3 billion rand in irregular spending. He told Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on October 23 that testimony from the Madlanga Commission and parliamentary committees reveals the need for preventive measures. The proposed dashboard would display bid committee members, company ownership, and progress reports for all government contracts. South Africa loses billions annually to procurement fraud that often involves political connections and fake documentation.
