Makerere VC Defends Academic Credentials

Makerere University Head Defends Academic Credentials.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe defended his academic qualifications on Wednesday, responding to claims questioning his credentials for the top post.

The Vice-Chancellor faced allegations from activists who said he lacked both proper qualifications and enough published works to serve as a Professor at Makerere. They claimed he fell short of the minimum ten publications needed when applying for the Vice Chancellor position.

Nawangwe called these claims "speculation by street preachers and foreign agents" meant to "intimidate me into abandoning my mission." He stressed his commitment to ending what he termed "hooliganism" at what he described as "the top black university on earth" and his goal to transform it into a leading research institution.

Addressing his education directly, Nawangwe pointed to his 1983 Master of Science in Architecture from the Kiev Institute of Civil Engineering. The institution, which became the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, awarded him a PhD in Architecture in 1989.

He explained that European professional courses did not offer bachelor's degrees before the Bologna Process reforms. These reforms created a standard three-tier system of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees across European universities to help students transfer credits between schools.

Responding to publication concerns, Nawangwe stated he had produced 14 academic works, exceeding the required minimum. His statement aimed to put to rest questions about his leadership qualifications at Uganda's premier university.
