Malawi court halts Bushiri extradition, SA vows to appeal

South African Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said her government will explore all legal remedies after a Malawian court blocked efforts to return religious figures Shepherd and Mary Bushiri for criminal proceedings. Justice Mzonde Mvula determined on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025, that magistrates erred by approving their transfer without ensuring fair procedures or verifying submitted materials properly. The couple leads Enlightened Christian Gathering and departed South Africa in 2020 despite bail restrictions tied to accusations of stealing over 100 million rand from church members through fraudulent investments. Authorities in their native Malawi arrested them shortly after their escape.

Departmental representative Terrence Manase confirmed officials are examining the decision before selecting their response strategy. Kubayi stressed her nation values judicial independence in both countries while maintaining focus on accountability through diplomatic channels. Prosecutors describe substantial proof involving pyramid schemes targeting vulnerable believers. The Bushiris celebrate the outcome as vindication and continue operating their ministry, attracting large crowds for worship gatherings, emphasizing supernatural healings and financial blessings. Their 2020 departure via private aircraft while facing travel prohibitions has prompted scrutiny about security lapses.
