Malawi digs up Mutharika for another go

Peter Mutharika secured victory in Malawi's presidential election after incumbent Lazarus Chakwera acknowledged defeat before official results emerged. Economic troubles dominated voter concerns as inflation reached 33 percent during Chakwera's five-year presidency. Rising prices for maize and fertilizer devastated the agriculture-based economy of 21 million citizens. Chakwera admitted he contacted Mutharika directly to congratulate him on the electoral triumph. The former pastor failed to fulfill campaign promises about job creation and fighting corruption.

Mutharika's Democratic Progressive Party attracted voters who remembered stronger economic performance during his previous 2014-2020 administration. His campaign emphasized proven leadership and pledged to resolve foreign exchange shortages within months. The 85-year-old constitutional expert previously maintained single-digit inflation rates despite facing corruption allegations. Chakwera's legal challenge to delay results failed when the High Court rejected his petition regarding voting irregularities. Mutharika returns to power five years after losing to Chakwera in a court-ordered election rerun.
