Malawi Human Rights Commission Condemns Police Inaction During Violent Protest Attacks

Malawi Human Rights Commission officials have spoken out against attacks that hurt peaceful protesters. Police officers watched but did nothing to help during violence on June 26, 2025. Chairperson Chikondi Chijozi criticized security forces for failing to protect citizens from harm. Masked attackers hurt activist Sylvester Namiwa and other demonstrators during the approved march. Commission leaders said police behavior threatens democracy and basic freedoms.

Security officers stood nearby but refused to stop the violent assaults against protesters. Attackers damaged cars and burned three vehicles during the demonstration. The human rights group confirmed authorities had given permission for the peaceful march. Commission members noted similar violence happened on November 13, 2024 and March 19, 2025. Officials said these repeated incidents create a pattern of dangerous behavior.

Human rights leaders called the attacks part of a growing problem with violence going unpunished. The commission demanded police explain their actions during the protest. Officials promised to keep fighting for citizen rights and protecting spaces for civic activities. Commission members warned that police failures damage trust between citizens and government. Leaders stressed the importance of defending democratic values against violent threats.
