Malawi Jail Party Gives Inmates Stress-Free Day

Malawi Prison Service wants help for a special wellness event at Kachere Women's Prison. The prison plans activities to help female inmates deal with stress and sadness. Officials hope these programs will help women prepare for life after prison. Steve Meke speaks for the prison service and asked groups to support the event. Churches, community groups and aid organizations can donate money or volunteer time.

The Stress-Free Day will have sports, games and cultural shows for inmates. Women can play football, compete in chess matches and perform traditional dances. A beauty contest and art displays will let inmates show their creative skills. Prison officials believe these activities build friendships among inmates and staff. The events also teach life skills that help women when they leave prison.

Kachere Women's Prison already runs many programs to help inmates learn new skills. The prison has schools that teach reading and writing to inmates. Women can learn to sew clothes, cut hair and grow food. These job skills help former inmates find work after they finish their sentences. Prison officials say reformed inmates become valuable community members who help Malawi grow.
