Malawi marks Railway Safety Week amid vandalism fears

The Malawi government, through the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, marks Railway Safety Week from October 20 to 26, 2025. This year’s focus is on stopping vandalism and encroachments to keep railways and communities safe.

Secretary Bright Kumwembwe said everyone shares the duty of protecting railway infrastructure. He warned that trespassing, stealing rail clips, damaging signals, or defacing signs puts lives at risk and harms national development. The ministry noted rising vandalism on routes like Marka-Bangula, Nkaya-Limbe, Sandama-Salima, and Kanengo-Nchinji.

Throughout the week, the ministry will run awareness activities and ask the public to report damage or unsafe acts near tracks. Kumwembwe stressed that safe railways depend on safe, responsible communities.
