Malawi pastors claim secret Chakwera loans, NEEF denies disbursement

The National Economic Empowerment Fund rejected claims about distributing K8.4 billion to religious leaders through a presidential community program. Young clergy members contradict this denial and assert they obtained financial assistance from the government initiative. NEEF officials characterized such reports as deliberately misleading information designed to damage the institution's reputation. The microfinance organization threatened legal action against individuals spreading what it termed false statements about its lending practices. NEEF emphasized that all loans undergo rigorous evaluation procedures before approval.

Pastor Tusalifye Mbeye publicly praised President Chakwera's administration on July 15, 2025, during a Malawi Broadcasting Corporation appearance. The Young Pastors Association endorses Chakwera's reelection bid for the September 16 elections. Religious leaders cite the president's governance approach and leadership vision as reasons for their support. They connect his administration's policies to the Malawi 2063 development framework. The controversy highlights tensions between official denials and beneficiary testimonials regarding government funding programs.
