Malawi starts food aid drive despite K148bn funding gap

Malawi has launched its 2025/2026 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme despite confronting a K148 billion funding shortfall that threatens full implementation of the K209.4 billion initiative. Department of Disaster Management Affairs Commissioner Wilson Moleni revealed during a ceremony on Saturday at Kaphatenga Primary School Ground in Salima that authorities secured K51 billion from the government and partners but chose to begin distributions immediately to prevent hunger deaths among four million vulnerable citizens affected by drought and escalating food costs. President Peter Mutharika declared a State of Disaster before program activation.

Eligible households will receive either 50 kilograms of maize or K90,000 cash between November 2025 and February 2026 across all 28 districts and four cities. World Food Programme Country Representative Hyoung-Joon Lim confirmed the organization will collaborate with authorities to position maize at strategic depots while ensuring assistance reaches the most vulnerable families. Salima District Commissioner James Mwenda cautioned beneficiaries against selling relief supplies and warned traders not to exploit food scarcity through price manipulation.
