Malawi Teens Gear Up to Crush Suicide Crisis Retreat

Malawi faces serious mental health problems, as 153 people killed themselves in early 2025. A youth group called Sorry I'm Not Sorry addresses this crisis through education programs nationwide. Joseph Daniel Sukali started the organization and has helped more than 5,000 people through online meetings and community visits. The group teaches students about mental wellness and invites medical experts to lead learning sessions. Mental Health Awareness Month takes place every May, highlighting these important issues.

The campaign utilizes the theme 'Umunthu' and Collective Mental Health Support, emphasizing the importance of people supporting one another. More than 70 mental health workers and supporters will meet at a special event on May 31st. The gathering takes place at the old Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe with talks and presentations. Participants will visit Maula Prison after the conference to help inmates with mental health struggles. Mayor Esther Sagawa will attend as the main guest speaker.

Ruth Kulaisi and Chitsanzo Mafuta will give speeches about mental wellness topics. Dr. Ndumanene Silungwe will share medical knowledge with attendees during the daylong program. Chizmo Njuchi will perform music to enhance the event's enjoyment for everyone. The retreat aims to reduce shame around mental health problems and build stronger community connections. Sorry I'm Not Sorry hopes their work will prevent more deaths and help people find hope.
