Malawi Watchdog Demands Kapondamgaga Fired Now

A democracy group wants President Lazarus Chakwera to fire his chief of staff immediately. The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives sent a letter on June 3 demanding Prince Kapondamgaga's removal. British courts named Kapondamgaga as someone who took bribes from businessman Zuneth Sattar. The group says keeping him hurts Malawi's reputation around the world. Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa wrote that corruption allegations against government workers should lead to quick action.

Westminster Magistrates Court started hearing the case on May 30 about Sattar's bribery scandal. Chakwera suspended Kapondamgaga back during 2022 after Martha Chizuma's corruption report mentioned 84 people. The president brought him back to work quietly despite the serious charges. CDEDI reminded Chakwera about his promises to fight corruption during his national speech. The organization warned that protecting corrupt officials destroys the president's moral authority to lead anti-corruption efforts.
