Malawi women’s clubs bench league over broken promises

Well, here's another classic football admin story. All the women's clubs in the Southern Region league in Malawi just straight up quit. They're not playing another game. The whole thing is on ice because the Football Association of Malawi, FAM for short, has not paid them their promised subventions and player bonuses. The clubs sent a formal letter to FAM and copied the National Women’s Football Association, too.

They say they've tried talking about this money a bunch of times, getting nothing back but empty promises and radio silence. This isn't some protest for fun, according to their statement. They call it a last-ditch move because the lack of cash is wrecking everything. Team operations are falling apart; they can't handle basic logistics or admin, and the players are totally demoralized from not getting their bonus money. The clubs framed it as a necessary step to protect the players and officials who keep showing up despite getting screwed over.

They insist they still want to build up women's soccer in the country. The door is open for a return, but only after FAM pays every last bit of what it owes. For now, with no public response from the football governing body, the league schedule is just in limbo. The whole situation puts the future of that regional competition in serious doubt.
