Malaysia bets big on green hydrogen and floating solar as Anwar touts energy leap

Malaysia launched major renewable energy initiatives in Terengganu through partnerships between state-owned energy companies. Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Petroliam Nasional Bhd, and Terengganu Inc established the Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar project alongside a Green Hydrogen Hub. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim officiated the July 12 ceremony at Sultan Mahmud Hydro Electric Power Station in Kenyir. The projects advance Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap and Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap objectives. Government officials and corporate executives attended the launch event.

The floating solar initiative utilizes Kenyir's existing hydroelectric reservoir as a foundation for photovoltaic panel installation. TNB Genco leads this development through collaboration with the state investment body Terengganu Inc. The project forms part of TNB's broader 2.5-gigawatt hybrid solar-hydro program. Floating panels will generate renewable electricity while maximizing use of current infrastructure assets. This approach demonstrates efficient resource utilization for clean energy expansion.

Petronas and TNB jointly developed the Green Hydrogen Hub within the Kenyir-Kertih corridor. The facility will produce hydrogen derivatives and strengthen grid infrastructure for regional clean energy growth. Operations will maintain continuous renewable generation through electrolysers powered by the floating solar project. The hub will manufacture downstream products like green methanol and green ammonia. Carbon capture and storage infrastructure in Kertih will support the integrated ecosystem.

Anwar emphasized Malaysia's leadership potential in regional green energy development. He noted the projects could generate between 500 and 2,500 gigawatts of capacity. The integrated system represents Malaysia's first end-to-end renewable energy ecosystem at this scale.
