West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced Rs 5,00,000 compensation and home-guard positions for families of 23 victims killed in landslides and floods in North Bengal's hills, Terai, and Dooars regions. She departed for the affected areas on Monday afternoon to assess the damage and stated the government would provide one family member from each victim's household with employment in the state police. Banerjee attributed the disaster to water releases from Bhutan's dams, calling it a man-made crisis similar to flooding in South Bengal caused by the Damodar Valley Corporation.
Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized Banerjee's response as deflecting responsibility through blame-shifting. He argued she alternately targets DVC and Bhutan rather than addressing government priorities. The chief minister had emphasized that compensation and employment support fulfilled the state's social responsibility toward families who lost members in the disaster.
