Mamelodi Sundowns top Africa's earners at FIFA Club World Cup with $12.55 million

Mamelodi Sundowns walked away from the FIFA Club World Cup with the biggest paycheck among African teams. The South African squad pocketed $12.55 million even though they failed to advance past the group stage. Their impressive earnings came from combining the basic $9.55 million participation payment with an extra $3 million bonus. The bonus money resulted from securing one victory and one draw during their three matches. Despite their early exit, the financial rewards made the trip worthwhile for the team.

Four African clubs competed at the tournament held across various American cities. Espérance from Tunisia and Al Ahly from Egypt both earned $11.55 million for their efforts. Espérance managed to win one game during their group stage campaign. Al Ahly secured two draws but could not find a victory. Both teams still collected substantial prize money despite failing to reach the knockout rounds.

Wydad Casablanca from Morocco endured the most disappointing tournament experience. The Moroccan side lost each of their three group matches without earning a single point. Their winless streak meant they returned home with just the standard $9.55 million participation fee. The team missed out on any performance bonuses that could have boosted their earnings. African football may not have dominated the competition, but the continental representatives certainly benefited financially from their appearances at the prestigious global tournament.
