Man fined US$200 for leaving loaded rifle at lodge

A Chitungwiza court fined a man $200 after he abandoned his loaded pistol at a guest house in Seke. Simbarashe Ruwocha, 38, pleaded guilty on charges of failing to secure his CZ V20 firearm under the Firearms Act. The weapon contained five rounds of ammunition when a housekeeper discovered it on the floor on Sept. 1.

Magistrate Batista Madzingira gave Ruwocha the option of paying the fine or serving five months in prison. The self-employed resident checked out of Mukanya Lodge on Aug. 31 without the weapon. Employee Yeukai Mudimu found the pistol while cleaning, and management contacted authorities. Police investigations traced the firearm to Ruwocha through its serial number before arresting him.
