Man strangles aunt after witchcraft rumors swirl

A man killed his aunt over witchcraft accusations after a child's death. Police in Kaporo, Karonga District, arrested 43-year-old Cannan Mkandawire for allegedly strangling his 63-year-old aunt, Mirrium Mkandawire, at Edwin Village. Authorities say the murder followed the mysterious death of a child days earlier, with villagers blaming the older woman for using witchcraft and banning her from the burial. The suspect reportedly threatened her life before the killing.

The victim's son discovered the body during a routine visit, alerting police, who found evidence of forced entry through a window. A hospital postmortem confirmed death by suffocation from strangulation. After the investigation, police arrested Mkandawire, who they say confessed voluntarily to the crime. The suspect, from Vikalembeka Village under Traditional Authority Kilupula, now faces a murder charge and will appear in court.
