Manicaland miners hit with US$3 000 Zanu-PF levy

Manicaland miners face demands to pay at least $3,000 each for the Zanu PF annual conference scheduled for next month. Provincial Affairs Minister Misheck Mugadza sent letters after a fundraising meeting on Sept. 28, setting the deadline for Oct. 2. Workers in Penhalonga expressed anger over the requirement while dealing with rising expenses and low income in the sector.

The mandatory levy could generate millions from the province's mining community. Zanu PF provincial branches have backed President Emmerson Mnangagwa for leadership past his constitutional term limit ending in 2028. Tensions between Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga appear to be escalating as both compete for state resources and influence after the 2017 military takeover.
