Maraga Stands with Victims of Anti-Finance Bill Protests

Former top judge David Maraga shocked many people when he marched with grieving families last month. The families wanted to honor loved ones who died during deadly government protests. More than 60 people lost their lives when police attacked citizens who opposed new tax laws. Maraga said he felt sorry for the families and wanted to stand with them during their pain. The retired chief justice believed these victims deserved to be remembered.

Police promised to help the memorial march but attacked protesters with teargas instead. Maraga walked less than 20 meters before officers started shooting gas at the peaceful crowd. He saw no violence from the families who just wanted to lay flowers for their dead relatives. The former judge said police behavior was completely wrong and unexpected. Officers had earlier pledged to support the grieving families during their tribute.

The June 2024 protests killed at least 61 people and hurt over 300 others across Kenya. Human rights groups condemned police for using live bullets against unarmed citizens. Families demanded justice and compensation for their losses but got nothing. Government officials promised investigations but never punished any senior security leaders. The memorial marked one year since the violent crackdown began.

Maraga defended his decision to join the march despite heavy criticism from government supporters. He said people should care about injustice and show compassion for suffering families. The former judge warned that police brutality could affect anyone at any time. Critics attacked him for attending but he refused to apologize for his actions. Maraga believed moral people must speak out against wrongdoing.
