Mario Kart World Steers Switch 2 into New Racing Frontier

Nintendo Switch 2 launches with Mario Kart World as its flagship title. The game serves as the sequel to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which sold nearly 70 million copies on the original Switch. Critics gave the new racing game positive reviews despite some concerns about matching its predecessor's success. Wccftech awarded Mario Kart World an 8.5 out of 10 score for its updated mechanics and open world design.

Development required a much larger team than previous entries. Around 300 developers worked on Mario Kart World compared to 163 people who made Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Nintendo expanded the art department from the previous game, tripling its workforce size. The company partnered with external studios like Monolith Soft, Bandai Namco, Imagica Geeq, and 1-Up Studio to complete the project.

The expanded development scope explains the game's higher price point of 80 dollars. Mario Kart World features an open world approach that differs from traditional track-based racing. The game aims to launch the Switch 2 console with strong momentum from day one. Early player reception appears promising for the ambitious racing title.
