Mario Kart World Unleashes Monster Races On Switch 2

Nintendo shared details about Mario Kart World for the upcoming Switch 2 console. The racing game could become the new system's most popular title. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold over 65 million copies on the original Switch. Producer Kosuke Yabuki started making prototypes back in March 2017. The team began serious development work at the end of that same year.

Developers faced major technical challenges during the creation process. They wanted 24 racers instead of the usual 12 players per race. The team also planned to build one large connected world rather than separate tracks. Original Switch hardware could not handle these ambitious features properly. Moving the project to Switch two solved most performance problems.

Programming Director Kenta Sato explained how the first console limited their vision. The team considered reducing graphics quality and frame rates to make things work. Nintendo decided to focus on Mario Kart 8 downloadable content instead of rushing the new game. Game journalist Nathan Birch tested Mario Kart World and enjoyed the experience. He praised the connected map design and sees potential for future expansion.
