Matabeleland North posts 9.7% GDP growth

Matabeleland North Province has experienced significant economic growth, recording a 9.7 percent GDP increase last year and substantially outperforming the national average. The acting Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Godfrey Mukwakwami, attributed this success to increased investments in mining, manufacturing, and tourism, alongside a national focus on value addition. He reported that manufacturing was recovering, aided by policies emphasizing product beneficiation before export.

Mukwakwami made these comments while hosting a delegation from the African Peer Review Mechanism, which was conducting a review of economic governance. He also credited sound monetary and fiscal policies, including the central bank's management of the ZiG currency, for contributing to the province's stability and growth. The delegation was led by Ambassador Aly El Hefny and included other officials such as Ambassador Albert Chimbindi.

Ambassador Chimbindi emphasized the importance of prioritizing local production to strengthen the domestic economy and create jobs. He urged the community to leverage its natural resources and human capital for further development, stating that effective resource use was key to national progress.
