Rains worsen Matabeleland roads as Ndebele warns

Opposition politicians and civic leaders have warned that crumbling infrastructure across Matabeleland poses serious hazards to motorists as rainfall intensifies damage to highways and bridges. Mqondisi Ndebele of the Freedom Alliance highlighted particular risks for travelers crossing from neighboring countries during the holiday period, noting that routes through Nkayi, Tsholotsho, Lupane, and Kezi have become increasingly treacherous.

Officials criticized multiple security checkpoints that delay motorists beyond the modernized Beitbridge crossing with South Africa. Thembelani Dube attributed deteriorating conditions to inadequate contractor oversight, while Mthwakazi Republic Party president Mqondisi Moyo condemned roadside inspections targeting families transporting household items as economic harassment rather than legitimate enforcement.

The concerns emerge as National Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda has proposed additional tollgates throughout Matabeleland North to generate maintenance revenue.
